Normally, these wireless dog fences are omnidirectional, broadcasting equally in all directions. This gives a circle of "permitted area." But this doesn't work too well for non-round yards, and we wanted to keep the dog out of the neighbor's yard a little better. By adding a "sheild" of sorts, the signal strength could be curbed to cut the area in undesired locations.
